5 Habits That Block Students’ Academic Success and How Parents Can Help
Parents put in a great effort to help their children attain a top-notch education and career. Seeing their children achieve mastery in academics and become better professionals brings meaningful fulfillment.
Unfortunately, even with this help, many children lag and struggle with getting even average academic scores because certain habits block them from success. This is disheartening because we want to see them become Genius problem-solvers and innovators who can bring positive change through their creations!
But all is not lost. Here are the 5 habits that block academic success and ways parents can overcome them while working with their children as a team.
1. Procrastination
Some students work well without external pressure, but others fall into the habit of procrastination, which distracts them from their studies. It is common for many to allocate less time for specific tasks and postpone study time for the latter part of the month. Some even delay it so much that they take the path of rote memorization, which misses an essential part of learning, i.e., understanding concepts deeply.
In order for their children to stop procrastinating, parents must support their children in coming up with a timetable and ensuring they stick to it. Start by dividing lessons or chapters into small portions. Next, set a time slot or deadline for each portion to clarify the time needed for a topic. This reduces stress, while managing time effectively, and creates a flow of learning right from the start.
2. Weak planning
Let's say you have a timetable and have allotted time to specific lessons. It may work out great for some students. However, if a student is unable to thoroughly understand the topic in the given time, they are back to square one. This affects the timing they allotted to the next topic. In the end, they only have limited knowledge and do not feel confident while appearing for exams due to a lack of proper planning.
To break this block, parents must have a healthy discussion with their children about which topics they can learn quickly and which ones need more attention or a mentor. They can master the topics they can learn independently, but they must assign an entirely different time slot for the tough ones. It is recommended that they start with the difficult ones and move towards easier ones (or vice versa if that doesn’t work) to boost confidence.
3. Checking social media in-between studies
It is common to see people engrossed in smartphones and scrolling endless social media pages in this digital era. Some may even browse their social media accounts simply because of the fear of missing out! Moreover, this habit may spoil study time for many students because they keep checking their social media while they are studying.
It is the responsibility of both parents and students to curb such distractions and not get tempted to check such apps or accounts while learning. Keeping smartphones away or turning off notifications might be an added advantage.
4. Not clearing doubts
Although many students proactively raise concerns while learning, a few still shy away from asking questions. This might happen due to a lack of confidence or because multiple students' doubts are solved at once. The teacher may run out of time while answering a few of them. Moreover, some of those students forget about getting the solution and leave the topic if they do not understand it.
Parents must address this issue and understand the challenges their children might face while learning. They should also encourage their children to speak up and clarify doubts whenever they arise. Once they develop this habit of solving doubts instantly or noting them down to ask later, they can better learn their subjects smoothly.
5. Committing mistakes & giving up too soon
Students move towards victory when they learn from their mistakes and ensure they do not repeat them. That doesn't mean that they can't fail. But if they continue repeating the same mistakes, they are blocking success. Many times they give up on their dreams due to failing once or twice.
A child needs their parents to be their buddies and cheerleaders when they commit mistakes or fail. Parents must provide the right support, guidance, and optimism. Finding out their shortcomings and creating a plan to work upon will pave a phenomenal path to success.
Wrapping Up
One of the pivotal roles parents play in their child's success is remaining up-to-date with new technological solutions that can boost their progress. As the competition grows, the challenge to stay ahead of it through supplemental support also grows. In order to shine and become influential leaders, students need an all-rounder platform that is easily accessible.
How can you learn faster and develop a deeper understanding of concepts during such times? The answer is simple: an immersive learning experience makes it possible to view topics like in a real-life laboratory!
